Śri was founded by Stephen Szczepanek in 2001. Establishing a textile showroom is a continuation of Szczepanek's twenty years in the field of fine arts: for ten years before founding Śri, Szczepanek held post as senior curator for a private art collection in New York City, a collection that includes over 2,000 museum quality artworks highlighting masterpieces of 20th century design and arts from Asia. He also holds two degrees in painting.

While working as a curator, Szczepanek traveled widely throughout China, India and Japan where he was allowed private access to these countries' most important museum collections. This background, combined with his personal passion for the language and meaning of cloth, encouraged the founding of Śri, whose name is an homage to the Hindu goddess associated with prosperity, well-being, and illustriousness.

Śri is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York and is open by appointment on weekdays, weekends and evenings.
