Antique folk garments
Handmade garments in Japan assume a variety of forms, whether they be stunning, hand-painted all-silk formal kimonos or simple, workaday garments made to service a farmer or laborer and created from scraps homespun cotton, cast-off silks or bast fibers such as ramie or hemp.
We are pleased to offer antique and vintage garments that are entirely hand-stitched and which are very often pieced of several different fabrics, due to the poverty and resourcefulness of the farmer or laborer who hand made them. The range of garments offered on this site is from the Meiji Era (1868-1912) up to the mid-Showa Era, approximately the 1950's.
